Print competions final results

Congratulations to Helen Cullens for victory in the Colour Prints league, and to Ian Duffield for leading the way home in the Monochrome section.

Albert Beale & Carter awards.

This years winner ofthe Albert Beale trophy for “Coloured refelections” was Geoff Clinton with his study of Cologne Cathedral. Also commended were Juliet Morton for “River Teifi”, Colin McInnes for “Cafe Reflections” and Michael Shaw for “In a globe”.

The Carter award (for a triptych) in 2017 went to Steve Ballard for “Lighting department”. Commended in this category were “Sundowner” by Gareeh Richards, “Transition” by Colin McInees, “Matlock Bath Illuminations” by Chris Bennett, and “Birds in our garden” also by Chris Bennett.

Both competitions were judged by Mark Buckley-Sharp, who gave some helpful hints for the future, especially up on getting colour balance across all 3 elements of your triptych.

Projected Images Round 3

Congratulations to Colin MInnes for his winning entry of “Derwent boats”, and to Chris Bennett for 2nd and 3rd places – both of which scored 20.

Round 3 Print results

Bit late but I have added the scores for Round 3 for both Colour and Mono.

In the colour section, Geoff Clinton managed 1st and 2nd places with “Wistman’s Wood Dartmoor” and “Pen y garreg Dam in the mist” respectively, with Laura Barfoot taking 3rd place with “Your Majesty!”

Meanwhile in mono, Ian Duffield did the 2st and 2nd double with “Lynx cubs on a fallen tree” and “Path to the pikes”. Chris Williams took third with “Angelic Music”.

As yet I don’t have images to upload.

What are judges looking for ?

A question I’m sure we have all pondered from time to time!

Julia Cleaver came along last week and gave her talk on teh above subject, although I think was missig the sub-title of “… and how to do acheive it”, as she provided us with lots of inspiration and guidance on making those winning images.

Some highlights that I noted down were :

“POOTA” – a useful acronym for the 5 key qualies a judge will look for :

Powerful Composition
Overall and Immediate Effect
Originality
Technical Merit
Artistic Merit.

Along with the 7 P’s and the other checklist Julia shared, I will try to put together a better page on the website rather than bury them in a post.

Round 2 Projected & Prints

Apologies for the late posting – I had to go away on buiness and decided to take a few days on the end to spend with my camera in Death Valley -highly recommended!

I have updated the results table for both Projected and Prints competitions round 2. I am a bit lacking in jpgs of the actual iamges so anyone who was successful please forward them to me and I’ll add them to the galleries.

Numbers were down for the prints comp, so as per Steve’s request, please try to get entries in for the next round – you have time to prepare and lots of opportuity over christams as the next rounds are not until 24th Jand and 7th Feb respectively.

Studo Practical

Studio Practical

This week Chris Drury arranged a number of setups for some studio work, including some professional models to sit for us. We had high key & low key sets ups using flash and a simple fixed lighting setup. With everyone using their own camera and sharing a number of flash triggers there was at times a bit of confusion, but everyone seemd to enjoy themselves and most people learnt soimething useful to take away for their own portaiture work.

Remember ISO 200, f11, 1/125th, flash on!

Big thanks to Chris for putting in a lot of work in organising the models, setting up, helping us al get the right settings, and then dismantling again.

Prints Competition Round 1

The first round of the prints competition saw Helen Cullens come in with the winning entries in BOTH Colour and Mono Categories. The judge was Terry Coffey, and the marks were pretty high all round - hopefully a reflection of the standard of the images.

All the placed entries that have been suplied can be found here : Colour and Mono.

autumn-colours-on-permajet-parchment-paper

Helen informs me that the winning colour picture "Autumn Colours" was taken on a club weekend away, and the trees are located in Beresford Dale. The print was made on "Permajet Parchment" paper, which gave it an added quality that was remarked on by sereval members.
