Portfolio Competition

Portfolio Competition

This was the club's first portfolio competition and attracted 19 portfolio entries with a total of 129 images - quite a challenge for the judge with some very useful comments for how to get more from our portfolio entries. A portfolio competition will probably become a regular event. The winning entry went to Gareth Richards with "Zagori", second place to Derek Nash with "Trekking through Nepal" and Chris Williams got on the scoresheet again taking third place with "Winter in St Albans".

Project Image 2021/22 Round 2

Project Image League 2021/22 round 2.

Emma does it again and takes first spot with her "Kingfisher" image. And taking both second and third places is Richard Craddock with "My Garden Bugs" and "Highland Cow" respectively.

Project Image 2021/22 Round 1

Project Image League 2021/22 round 1.

After her success with Image of the Year last season Emma has started this one with a win for "Hallstatt Morning Mist", plus of the 6 images (from 47 entered) to score the maximum 20 points, 3 of them were Emma's - remarkable. Second went to Chris Williams with "Lizzie and Stella" and third Steve Ballard with "Daddy's Lil Monster".

2021/22 Season

The new camera club season is under way with a mix of in-person meetings at the Hall, and some others over zoom. Check out the programme page for the latest, but be aware this is subject to change as things settle down.

Collecting Water (1st 2021 Beale)

Images of the year

This year the "Image of the Year" was selected by the members using a voting system. No face-to-face meetings have taken place this season which means no print competitions have been held. Entries were therefore limited to Project Images and consisted of those placed in all the PI competitions throughout the year plus optionally one image per member that was entered into a competition and was not placed.

Projected Image of the year.

Winner: Emma Mapletoft with "Collecting Water", a very good achievement, more special as having joined late in the season she had missed most of the competitions.  Second and third places both taken by Steven Else with "A Morning in the Ardennes" and "St Albans Abbey" respectively.

Congratulations to Emma and Steven.

Collecting Water (1st 2021 Beale)

Colour and Mono Print of the year.

Suspended this year as the pandemic caused all print competitions for the season to be cancelled.

Steve Ransom Trophy

In memory of Steve Ransom the set subject of this competition rotates through three topics with which Steve was most associated. This year the set subject is (Local) Architecture - local part recognising the limitations COVID has imposed on our ability to travel.

In first place with St Albans Cathedral Tower was Colin McInnes, second Steven Else with St Albans Abbey and in third position Car Park be Steve Ballard.

Collecting Water (1st 2021 Beale)

Upcoming set theme competitions

The two remaining competitions the Albert Beale and Steve Ransom have been split and the rules are as below.

Albert Beale Trophy

The Albert Beale Trophy has been expanded slightly this year to “Reflections”, these can be any type of reflections, but the reflections must be the main element of the pictures. The competition will be held on the 4th May 2021 and upto 4 entries can be put in by each member. Images are jpgs within the envelope 1600×1200. The filenames are of the format “Title of Image”.jpg and submitted in Dropbox in the normal way.

Steve Ransom Memorial Trophy

As you all know Steve Ransom passed away last year and we decided to have a competition in his memory. Steve had a wide repertoire in Photography and it was not immediately obvious which genre the competition should be based on. In the main his Photography was centred around Architecture/Landscape/Nature themes and this is the overall source of competition. Each year a more specific theme will be selected from this overall set and the competition will be based on that. This year there have been limited opportunities for us to get out and about so the theme is “Local Architecture”, that is local to where you are, and the Architecture must form the main part of the pictures, but can be a detail or overall building(s), (or man-made structures). The competition will be held on the 18th May 2021 and upto 4 entries can be put in by each member. Images are jpgs within the envelope 1600×1200. The filenames are of the format “Title of Image”.jpg and submitted in Dropbox in the normal way.

Project Image 2020/21 Round 3

Project Image League 2020/21 round 2

Projected Image league competition round 3. This round of the PI competition was set as Mono, with first position awarded to Chris Williams (again) with "Moon over the city". Second with  "Candle smoke" was Juliet Morton and Third with "Daffodils" was Colin McInnes.

Close Up Photography Competition

Close Up, including Macro, competition

An interesting competition of Close Up photography, an ideal subject while in lockdown and inspired many members to come up with a wide range of subjects. Richard Craddock's 9:42 image of part of a watch face with an exposure of about 2.5 seconds resulting in the "indexed" second hand appearing three times took the honour of first place. A close second and also with 20 points was Hardware Landscape by Chris Williams. Third place went to Steve Else with Bumble Bee. In total the competition attracted 47 images and in spite of a hiccup with the competition software (many thanks to judges' tolerance) it was a successful evening.
